Major Decisions

  •  Decided to introduce Carl Linnaeus Award for PhD & Prof. MS Swaminathan Award  for MSc students- competitive award- introduced during the 10th NABS-National Conference. Decision ratified by EC & AGM

  • Revising Score Card System (SCS)- based on suggestions from EC and all members and the revised SCS will take effect from election year 2017.
  • Decided to initiate “NABS-Lecture Workshop” in line with “Science Academies Workshop” being jointly organized by Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi; The National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad and Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore. This will take effect from 2018.

Major Decisions

  • Renaming the Life Time Achievement Award as “Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Memorial NABS Life Time Achievement Award which will take effect from 2016.
  • A member of NABS can not apply for more than one award at a time. However, a member can apply for Fellowship and one award as per eligibility.
  • EC took exemption to the behaviour of a member as he was not selected as a Fellow during 2015. On discussion, a decision was taken to constitute a disciplinary committee to resolve such problems besides getting an undertaking from the applicants.
  • Decided to honor Dr. D. J. Bagyaraj with NABS-Recognition Award as he was the only Indian scientist invited to be a Working Committee Member of the FAO initiative on Global Soil Partnership programme contributing to sustainable soil management using microorganisms and also the only Indian Scientist invited to contribute to the Global Soil Biodiversity Atlas

 Creating an endowment in the name of eminent scientists or in the name of individuals proposed by NABSians

·         Two awards viz., NABS- Young Scientist Award (YSA) & NABS-Life Time Achievement Award (LTAA) were proposed. 

  • The format of all nomination / application for Fellowship / Associate Fellowship, NABS-Best Woman Scientist Award, NABS- Best Research Paper Award was completely revised and detailed guidelines developed and got approved by President.

  • The new fields of Biological Sciences were included thus enlarging the scope of biologists to enroll themselves as members and thus encouraging them to participate in NABS activities.



13th EC Meeting  - 20-07-2013

  • Ratification of nomination of Dr. Kirti Singh for Prof. S. Kannaiyan Memorial Award- 2013; selection of Fellowships and NABS-Best Research Paper Award.

  • Organizing National level seminars- National level seminars may be organized once in two / three years; NABS members may propose venue / theme etc. and take the responsibility of organizing the seminar at their institution with the support of NABS; The conduct of Annual meetings coupled with Interactive workshop is to be decided in lieu of above decision. The proposal, in principle, was approved.

  • New Awards proposed- Life Time Achievement Award & Young Scientist Award-The details are to be worked out and circulated to EC members to seek opinions /suggestions etc.

  • Additional guidelines amended to Prof. S. K. Memorial Award.

  • Decided to organize 6th IW as a seminar on 'Microbes and Human Welfare' in collaboration with Department of Microbiology, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli on 20-21 July, 2013.

  • NABS-Life Time Achievement Award & NABS- Young Scientist Award are to be considered for 2013.

11th EC Meeting  -  15-05-2012

Major Decisions:

  • Decided to confer Prof. S. K. Memorial Award on Dr. R. S. Paroda, Chairman, TAAS & Former DG, ICAR, New Delhi during 6th Annual Meeting /5th IW scheduled on 14-15- January, 2012 at University of Madras, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

  • Election of seven Fellows and two woman Scientists was approved and ratified.

  • The suggestion to enrol Ph.D students of Biological Sciences as a Provisional Life Member by fully paying the membership fee in vogue was accepted with immediate effect. The guide or supervisor should certify to this effect.

  • Decided to organize a National Seminar during 2014 in commemoration of a decade's achievement of NABS.

  • Life Membership fee revised from Rs.1,500/- to Rs.2500/- w.e.f  01-06-2012.

  • Decided to replace one third of EC members (six)with new members once in there years.

10th EC Meeting  -  13-11-2011

Major Decisions:

  • Condoled the sudden demise of beloved Prof. S. Kannaiyan, the Founder and President, NABS who expired on 20-10-2011.

  • Dr. M. Subramaniam, EC member proposed Dr. V. A. Parthasarathy for the post of President which was seconded by Dr. M. Anandaraj; proposal unanimously accepted.

  • Dr. M. Deiveekasundaram, EC member proposed Dr. D. J. Bagyaraj for the post of Vice-President which was seconded by Dr. M. Chinnadurai; proposal unanimously accepted.

  • Dr. M. Anandaraj was unanimously nominated as Chief Editor- NABS News Letter in place of Dr. V. A. Parthasarathy.

  • Registration and Processing Fee (R&PF) shall be Rs.3000/- (Rupees Three thousands only) for Fellowship / Associate Fellowship / NABS Best Woman Scientist applicants.

  • Corporate Fellowship- Renowned Corporate companies / Director /CEO are enrolled on payment of Rs.1.00 lakh (one time payment).

9th EC Meeting  - 12-03-2011

  • Election of Fellows and Associate Fellows for 2010 got approved.

  • Life Membership fee revised to Rs. 1500/- w.e.f. 5th January, 2011.

  • Registration and Processing Fee of Rs. 1000/- fixed for applicants of 'NABS-Best Woman Scientist Award'.

  • Decided to form a net work of biotechnologists, to start with southern parts of India, for sharing knowledge and skill in the upcoming areas of biotechnology.

  • Annual Maintenance Fee for NABS website fixed as Rs.5000/ (Rupees Five thousand only) per year (on calendar year basis) & takes effect from 2010.

  • Decided to call for applications every year from the Women members of NABS for the Award. The cut of marks is fixed as 60 per cent.

  • The decision to confer the Best Scientific Publisher Award on Shri S.K. Dutta- accepted & approved.

8th EC Meeting  -  23-10-2010

  • Admission of three Corporate Membership was approved.

6th EC Meeting  - 29-09-2008

  • Launched website for NABS [www.nabsindia.org].

  • Decided to work out modalities to nominate Associate fellowships.

  • Decided to enrol Corporate membership-industries engaged in product development related to any biological product directly or products beneficial to biological systems can be admitted (in two categories with a membership fee of Rs. 10, 000 / Rs. 5, 000 as onetime payment. 

  • Decided to confer Honorary Life Membership- Selected Fellows of NAAS and any other members with outstanding contribution to Biological Sciences are to be considered for admission as Honorary Member without collecting Life Membership fees.

  • Institution of awards to outstanding women academicians and scientists of the country was favourably considered and accepted.

  • Decided to seek funding for NABS from ICAR / DST / DBT / MoE as matching grant as per the rules since the minimum period of running the academy is fulfilled now.

5th EC Meeting  -  04-07-2008

  • Decided to introduce external experts to scrutinize nomination received for election of

  • Decided to create Associate Fellowship to members who are below 40 years of age to

  • encourage scientific talents and capabilities of young members.

  • Decided to organize EC meetings in various zones of the country so as to have wider

  • recognition for the NABS.

  • Launched NABS-News Letter with Dr. V.A.  Parthasarathy as Chief- Editor.

  • Dr. S. Gnanamanickam is authorised to act as Foreign Secretary for NABS.
